There is often too one-sided focus on the behavior of children with ADHD. By downgrading language, communication problems can be exacerbated later, especially in school situations.

This is what researcher and speech therapist Wenche Andersen Helland at Helse Fonna, and Statped Vest in Bergen (Norway), told forskning.no.


She also told:

In the event of a lack of efforts to promote language development in children with ADHD, we risk that many fall outside, that they do not learn what they are supposed to in school.
They will also be more likely to fail in the social interaction with peers. It is important with early measures to prevent a negative development as much as possible, she continues.

The article adds that Helland has led the work with a clinical study of 59 children aged 6-12 years. The study shows that children with ADHD have a poorer understanding of social language situations than typically developed children, ie healthy.

Wenche Helland explains:

- These children have a greater difficulty in expressing themselves coherently and precisely, understanding what others say and perceiving nuances in the language.

- In addition, it can be problematic to express oneself fluently and to make contact with others in a good way, says Helland.

It is noted that the purely linguistic structure, such as learning the correct sentence structure and pronunciation of words, is not as problematic in children with ADHD. Thus, the language difficulties observed in ADHD is more related to pragmatic use.
